The Makelele Role

Cladue Makelele

Claude Makelele, possibly the best defensive midfielder of his generation. Makelele was so good that he has a football term based on his name The Makelele role. Makelele role in the team was very simple he was there to beak up attacks and to hold the shape of the team. He was a very simple but efficient defensive midfielder who had a world class positional sense.

Makelele belived that he was key factor in the success that Madrid was having at the time so he asked for a new contract but perez didn’t agree with makelele so he sold him to Chelsea and made these comments.

“We will not miss Makelele. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn’t a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres”.

Makelele at Chelsea was a huge success for the player and the team. Makelele was more noticed and Chelsea had a very success period while he was there.

chelsea Makelele

This is what Jose has to say about the role makelele had at Chelsea.

“‘Look, if I have a triangle in midfield – Claude Makelele behind and two others just in front – I will always have an advantage against a pure 4-4-2 where the central midfielders are side by side. That’s because I will always have an extra man. It starts with Makelele, who is between the lines. If nobody comes to him he can see the whole pitch and has time. If he gets closed down it means one of the two other central midfielders is open. If they are closed down and the other team’s wingers come inside to help, it means there is space now for us on the flank, either for our own wingers or for our full-backs. There is nothing a pure 4-4-2 can do to stop things’.

This is what makelele had to say on his role and the impact it had on the team

“in every team you need to know what your role is and one of the keys to my role is to keep the balance of the team right. So when Didier [Drogba] goes here, I do this. When Frank [Lampard] goes there, I go there. Same with Michaael [Ballack]. When one person moves out of position, then someone else comes in and covers for them”

“When you play in my position you have to enjoy it. You can’t be thinking  I don’t get any goals’. You just enjoy it, you enjoy playing football, tackling, giving the ball. Just enjoy it. When you are small you have to tackle at the right moment. He might be tall, he might be strong but if you tackle at the right moment you’ll win it. It’s about timing.”

I the modern game defensive players don’t get a lot of credit for the jobs that they do. Sergio busquests for Barcelona is the most modern version of makelele that we have but the difference between the two that Sergio busquest is a better passer of the ball. Sergio busquest and Michael carrick will never get the praise that they deserve because their roles in their teams aren’t fancy and they don’t add any wow factor so most people don’t recognise the effect that they are having in the game

Update about blog

As you can see if haven’t posted on this website for over a month now. The main reason for this is because ive been very lazy and the other reason is because of the amount of work ive been getting at university  but by Monday I should have another article on this site which will be about the defensive midfielder position

Suarez vs RVP

This super Sunday features the to be consider by most one of the biggest rivalry in English football. Manchester Utd vs Liverpool. For a preview for that match I will be comparing the two top goal scorers currently in the premiership. Luis Suarez and Robin Van Persie

Attacking stats Suarez vs RVP

Currently this season robin van Persie has 16 goals while Suarez has 15. Suarez has 29 more shots than Van Persie which leads with Suarez having a lower conversion rate than Van Persie.

Both of these players can be seen as the main goal scoring threat for their clubs. With Suarez getting 48% of all of Liverpool league goals and robin van Persie getting 31% of all of Manchester Utd league goals.

When analyzing the stats we can see that Suarez has more shots then robin van Persie with Suarez averaging a shot every 20 minutes and robin van Persie averaging a shot every 26 minutes. Suarez has an shooting accuracy of 46% and robin van Persie with an accuracy of 51%. However we can see that robin van Persie is the better finisher with a conversion rate of 25% compared to Suarez rate of 16%

Passing stats suarez vs rvp

When looking at some passing stats we can see that Suarez is a more creative player with him creating 56 chances compared to Van Persie 22 chances created. However even with Suarez creating more than double amount of chances, Van Persie has double the amount of assists then Suarez this can be because Van Persie has more finishers around him

Conclusion

Van Persie and Suarez are both quality players but we can see that robin van Persie is the better player when it comes to the finishing department with his Superior conversation rate of 25%. However Suarez is the better creative player with him creating a chance every 32 minutes

Walcott to sign new Arsenal deal

theo walcott

Will he! Won’t he! Walcott signing a new deal at arsenal must be one of the most news arsenal fans can read but it appears that it is coming to an end.

According to reports at goal.com theo walcott will sign a new deal at arsenal. The deal will give walcott 90k p/w and will last until 2017.

Source: http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2013/01/07/3655958/walcott-to-sign-new-arsenal-contract-this-week?source=breakingnews

I think this deal will be very good for arsenal. After years of losing their best players, walcott signing will be positive news for all arsenal fans. This deal will mean that walcott will be probaly working more games in the striker position for arsenal, which I believe he isn’t ready for. Walcott looks very promising in the striker position but I dont think he is ready to lead the line for them at the moment however signing one of their best players to a new deal is very god for arsenal

What is the False 9

What is the false 9

When most people think of the false 9 they think of Messi. The greatest footballer of all time. He can create goals by dropping deep and proving the final pass or he can finish off chances that Dani Alves or Xavi and co creates for him.

This role has gotten famous because of how dominating Messi and Barcelona have been over the last five years. This role is normally played in a 4-6-0 formation with one of the midfielders playing higher up then the others

.Messi-new

The false 9 is a lone striker that starts in the number 9 position but they will drop deep into midfield

In Messi first season playing as a false 9 he got 53 goals showing the world how dangerous this role can be if it is performed with the correct players. Teams was confused with villa playing as a inside forward on the wing and with Messi dropping deep the opposition defenders didn’t know to go deep with Messi leaving them expose or leaving Messi to go deep to get the ball with no pressure.

In the European championship the false 9 went global with Spain trying it out with Fabregas playing as the false 9. In the 1-1 draw that Spain had with Italy, Fabregas scored the goal for Spain showing that other teams can use the false 9.

As Fabregas was the false 9 for Spain it allowed them to control the ball all over the pitch but without a ‘real number 9’ on the pitch they didn’t have anyone making runs into the empty space upfront.

fab

This can be seen in the game against France in the European championship with Fabregas on the pitch Spain was controlling the game but they didn’t have anyone making any dangerous runs. When Torres entered the game, Spain wasn’t controlling the game was they as when Fabregas was on the pitch but Torres was causing the French defence a lot of problems with his running off the ball/

A brief look on how formations have changed in the last decade

4-4-2

4-4-2 formation

The 4-4-2 has been the most popular formation in football for the last 20 years but recently more and more teams are looking at different formations such as the 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1 and the 4-2-3-1. This article will look at the strength and weaknesses of each formation and see why the 4-4-2 has died recently in the current game.

In the England game the 4-4-2 was the best formation for pundits and fans. It allowed teams to have a balance with two centres, fullbacks, centre mids, wingers and strikers. Most teams in England used this formation and this was the formation that the national team used all the time.

The Advantages of this formation

  • A very basic but effective formation
  • Two strikers can cause problems for most teams
  • The most balanced formation in football

The Disadvantages of this formation

  • Team can get overloaded in the midfielder position
  • Full backs are more limited
  • Lack of passing options – If a cm drops back, team will only have one central midfielder
  • No attacking midfielders or defensive midfielders

Why did this formation die out?

Modern football has changed; it is more focused on possession and a two man central mid can’t cope with teams that play three or five central players. More traditional wide men are rare in the modern game so teams are now playing wingers that cut in and they are allowing their full backs to cross the ball to their strikers.

One of the main reasons that the 4-4-2 has died is because of the lack of strike partnerships in the modern games. With most teams playing one striker it means that they either play a attacking midfielder behind the striker to have the formation as 4-4-1-1 or teams, play a defensive midfielder to have the formation as 4-5-1.

The rise of 4-4-1-1 and 4-5-1

4-4-1-1 Formation

The 4-4-1-1 is a very similar formation to the 4-4-2 but the different is one of the strikers are now playing deeper in a attacking midfielder position.

The advantages of 4-4-1-1

  • The attacking midfielder makes it hard for the opposition because it is hard to mark him
  • Allows more creative players to play

The disadvantages

  • Full backs are limited
  • A lack of a DM

The 4-5-1 replaces a striker with a DM. When looking at this formation on paper it appears to be very defensive but when the team is attacking it turns into a 4-3-3 with the wingers moving forward to support the lone striker.

4-5-1 Formation

The advantages of this formation

  • Very strong defensively
  • Very good counter attacking formation
  • Can control the midfield

The disadvantage of this formation

  • This formation only has one striker so your other players will need to be very good at supporting him

These two formations got popular because teams needed to have more players in the midfield and these two formations allowed the teams to get the options in the midfield

4-2-3-1 – The new 4-4-2

4-2-3-1 formation

This formation is the new 4-4-2. During the Euros 2012 it was the most popular formation that was used. 9 out of the 16 teams had the 4-2-3-1 as their primary formation. This includes Sweden, Germany and Holland.

One of the main reasons that the 4-2-3-1 is so popular because it allows teams to control the midfield and retain the ball. The two DM allows the team to have a good defensive base and they allow the three attacking midfielders to play more attackingly.

Advantages of this formation

The defensive cover – 6 defensive players in the team

The two DM stops the other team ACM from playing their natural game

This formation allows a lot of flexibly. One of the DM can be very defensive while the other can be a deep lying playmaker

Disadvantages of this formation

No link up between the back 6 and front 4

If the wingers don’t track back it can cause a lot of problems for the full backs

Brief summary

We can see that at the start of the decade the 442 was the most popular formation that was used because it allowed teams to have a good balance and because the game in the early decade wasn’t based on possession as it is now.

When more teams started to focus on possession teams started to use the 4-5-1 and 4-4-1-1 because it gave them more options in midfield which allowed them to control the game from the centre.

Now the most popular formation is the 4231 this is because it gives teams the most options in the midfield while keeping the team balance. The two defensive mids allow the team to win the ball from deep and it also allows the team to control the tempo of the game from deep. The front four allows the team to be very attacking with two wingers, one attacking midfielder and a lone striker.

Hazard v Carzola v Kagawa: Half Season Review

Kagawa

Last summer three new world class attacking midfielders joined the premiership. Hazard joined Chelsea for a fee of £32m. Carzola joined arsenal for a fee of 11m-17m and Kagawa joined Manchester utd for a fee of 12m.

Hazard was the blockbuster signing of the transfer window. Hazard had most of the European top clubs chasing after his signature. With hazard nearly signing for Manchester UTD he changed his mind at the last minute by deciding to sign for Chelsea. He said that Chelsea had the better ‘project’ but it is clear that money had a big factor in him signing for Chelsea

At the start of the season most people had Kagawa down as the signing of the season. In his last season at BVB he was fantastic becoming a fan favorite by scoring 13 goals and getting 8 assists in the league.

Carzola been the player that arsenal was looking for too fill the gap that Fabregas created when he left arsenal for Barcelona. Carzola was seen as many as the best player in La Liga outside Real Madrid and Barcelona

With these three players being three of the biggest signings at the start of the season I decided to compare how their stats are looking at the half way stage this season.

Bare stats

hazard v santi v kagawa ss

The bare stats show that Kagawa playing time is considerably less than Hazard and Santi. Santi created much more chances than the other two players but Hazard got more assists than the other two players. However if arsenal had better finishers in their team Santi assists would be higher. Carzola has scored more than the other two players. Defensively we can see that Carzola is much better with him involved with 67 defensive actions.

Per mins

hazard v santi v kagawa as

I don’t like comparing players with bare stats so I converted their stats into a min per so we can get a more accurate picture of the players and their stats. We can see that Santi has created a chance every 35 mins this can be because he is the main creative outlet for arsenal so most of their chances will come from him.

When looking at the two other passing stats we can see that Kagawa is the best passers out of the three with a passing accuracy of 89%. We can see that Santi has made 1441 much more than the other two players.

Stats wise we can see that Santi is better in 9 stats. Kagawa is better in two stat and Hazard is better in one stat

Conclusion

At the half way stage we can see that Santi Carzola is currently doing better than Kagawa and Hazard. This can be because Carzola is arsenal heartbeat and without him performing arsenal don’t perform to the same level. Kagawa hasn’t got a lot of play time because of injuries but in the second half of the season I expected him to perform and create more chances for Manchester Utd. Hazard the blockbuster isn’t taking the premiership as many would expect but if he can get that perform level that he had at the start of the year (5 assists in 2 games) he will start to look like the player most Chelsea fans wanted him to be

Daily Round Up: 01/01/2013

Premier league new year day round up

Dimitar Berbatov

West Brom 1 Fulham 2
Man City 3 Stoke 0
Swansea 2 Aston Villa 2
Tottenham 3 Reading 1
West Ham 2 Norwich 1
Wigan 0 Man Utd 4
Southampton 1 Arsenal 1

Another entertaining day in the premiership today with the Manchester clubs taking the spotlight.

The four nil win that Manchester utd got today lets them keep their seven point lead over Manchester city with robin van persie and Javier Hernandez both scoring twice.

Manchester city started their new year by winning 3 0 against stoke which will keep Manchester utd under pressure with  Zabaleta, dzeko and aguero getting on the score sheet for Manchester city

Tottenham got into third by beating Reading 3 1. Reading got the scoring underway by a goal from  Pavel Pogrebynak but Tottenham cameback with three goals from  Michael Dawson,  Emmanuel Adebayor and Clint Dempsey

Arsenal started their new year with a poor performance against Southampton. This season doesn’t look great for arsenal fans as the top four looks harder for them to reach after each game.  Gaston Ramirez started the scoring after some poor defending from Sagna but Arsenal responded after Guly put the ball in his own net to even the score.

After Aston Villa poor Christmas performances they was hoping to start the new years with a win but they was kept to a 2-2 draw with Swansea with Wayne Routledge and  Danny Graham getting on the score sheet for Swansea and with Andreas Weimann and Christian Benteke getting on the scoresheet for Aston villa

West ham beat Norwich 2-1 with Mark Noble and Joey O’Brien getting on the scoresheet for west ham. However Norwich got a consolation in added time by Russell Martin. This results meant that Norwich fall behide west ham

Fulham beat West Brom 2-1 which gives them their first win at The Hawthorns during the premier league. Dimitar Berbatov  started the scoring but Romelu Lukaku evened the scoring after the break however Alex Kacaniklic scored the winning goal for Fulham just before the 60th minute mark

No return for Henry

No return for the king

Today Wenger announced in a press conference that arsenal will not be signing fan favorite theirry  Henry for the third time. This is what wenger said “He is not ready, he has just come back from holiday anyway. At the moment we are not on that case”

I think this is good news for arsenal fans because they are at a point where i believe they shouldn’t be relying on their old players to do the game for them they should be looking for a striker that they sign on a long term deal that they can get on the cheap such as demba

Walcott to Juventus

walcott

Juventus are believed to stepped up their interest in arsenal Theo Walcott. Theo Walcott is now allowed to speak to any clubs that put in a offer for him and Juventus are believed to be taking advantage of this by entering a bidding war with Juventus

As an arsenal fan I don’t like the sound of this news but if we lose theo Walcott we got no one but ourself to blame by allowing the situation to get this far

Xabi open to England return

xabi

Xabi Alonso has put teams in the premiership on alert by saying he is open to a return to England. He has currently 18 months on his contract and Real Madrid has put the talks on hold. Xabi Alonso has reportly said this to reporters in spain

“I’ve no idea what will happen.I have not decided on my future. I will only stay at Real Madrid if I can offer the same level on the pitch as I can now and we will see what happens in the next few months.

There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there.”

I think this would be great if he returned to england. He is a world class player and he would improve the quality of the league however I believe that the only team that he would sign for would be liverpool and I think liverpool wouldn’t buy him even if the opportunity came up

The fall of Nuri Sahin

Sahin playing for real

Who is Nuri Sahin?

Nuri Sahin is a Turkish international midfielder who is currently on loan at Liverpool FC. He was born on the 5th of September 1988 which makes him 24 at the current time of writing. He is known for his technical ability because of his high quality of passing and because of his ability at taking set pieces. He is also known to be a very good tackler of the ball.

Nuri Sahin at BVB

In Sahin last season at Borussia Dortmund he was voted as the best player of the league (2010-2011). This is because of the role that he had at helping Borussia Dortmund winning the league that year.

Sahin role at borussia Dortmund was very important he was the heartbeat of the team conducing the team passing game but when he wasn’t passing he was doing a very good defensive job.

Sahin got a total of 1803 passes in this season for Dortmund this was the 3rd highest in the league with only Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm attempting more passes than Sahin in the league. He was averaging 62 passes a game in this season with a pass success rate of 76%. The reason I believe that his pass success rate wasn’t that high was because he tried to do a lot of high risk high rewards passes we can see this because he was averaging 3.61 key passes a game this was the highest in Europe top five leagues in that season because of his high risk high reward passes he got 13 assists in that season and he created 104 goal scoring chances.

Defensively Sahin was very good in his final he was averaging 4 tackles attempts per game completing an average of 3 tackles. He was also averaging 2 interceptions per game. From these stats we can see that Sahin is a very good reader of the game defensively and he puts himself in good positions to win the ball.

His performances in this season attracted the attention of top teams all over Europe and on the 8th of May Real Madrid brought him for a reported fee of £10 Million Euros.

Sahin at Real Madrid

Sahin signing for real

Nuri Sahin first season at Real Madrid can be seen as a failure. The season before he was seen as one of the best talents in world football but after one season at Real Madrid a lot of people started to doubt his amazing performances at Dortmund and started to put it down as luck.

In his first year at Real Madrid he only played ten games getting 2 goals and 2 assist. The reasons that Sahin had a lack of appearances for real Madrid can be because of the amount of injures that he had when he was at the club. When he first joined Real Madrid he got an injury in the summer and this meant that he got his first inclusion in the squad in November. A Month after he injured his knee again.

His performs at real Madrid has been all that bad in his debut against Osasuna he put in a nice tidy performance but he didn’t show any glimpses of his Dortmund form until he played against apoel in the champion league in the first league against apoel he should of got two assists and in the second league he created a lot of chances where he could of got more assist.

Sahin at Liverpool

Sahin signing for pool

During the summer real Madrid loaned sahin off to Liverpool. Liverpool fought off arsenal for sahin signature.

The loan of Sahin was thought to help Liverpool to fight for a top four place this season however it doesn’t seem like Sahin has done anything to support that. This season Sahin has played in 7 premiership games for Liverpool getting one goal and one assist averaging one key pass per game, 40 passes per game and a pass success rate of 82.5%.

Sahin has recently spoken about not liking the role that he is currently playing at Liverpool he would prefer to play in a deeper position instead of the advance role that the is currently playing at the moment at Liverpool.

The future

The mirror are reporting that Liverpool are thinking about cancelling the rest of Nuri Sahin deal and it doesn’t appear that Sahin will get a regular starting spot at real Madrid. I think that Sahin should leave real Madrid and try and join a team that gives a regular starting spot so he can remain the world of his footballing ability.
